The M22 is a further development of the legendary M21 model, which was used by special forces for years. The M21 features one key feature: it is battery-free. The M21 and M22 operate on fiber optics during the day and tritium at night. This solution ensures 12 years of continuous operation without any user intervention. This is the so-called "washout reticle" effect.

There are two solutions to this problem. The first, already used in the M21 model, is a polarizer. The polarizer is threaded onto the front of the M21 reflex sight. After attaching this accessory, the user could use a knob to "adjust the brightness of the viewed image." In the described situation, where we were standing under a canopy and aiming at a brightly lit object, the use of a polarizer allowed us to darken the image enough to clearly see the aiming point. Only the image itself was darkened, not the aiming point.
